Teen Acne BeforeHow To Deal With Acne In Puberty

How to deal with acne in puberty is one of the most frustrating and depressing conditions, which affects many teenagers today and unfortunately for some, it may continue onto later years.

For many teenagers, it is only a passing stage and provided it is dealt with effectively, it may never re-surface.

So let’s look at ways to deal with Acne so that it doesn’t cause a lifetime of problems.

More importantly, I’ll cover what not to do, because sometimes we take matters into our own hands and the results could be disastrous.

Before I get into products and treatments, it’s important to look at how you are treating your body internally.  You have no control over the chemical changes your body is going through at this stage, but you do have control over what you eat and drink and what you do to your skin.

When you go through puberty, the hormones in your body go into overdrive, and they have a huge impact on the little glands under the skin called sebaceous glands. These glands get bigger with the increased hormonal activity and therefore produce more sebum.

When there is too much sebum, the pores of the skin become blocked or clogged, which results in acne on the skin.

Can you control this overproduction? No. You can take many steps to help it along the way so that it doesn’t become an unsightly, painful condition.

Here are some simple, effective ways to support the journey:

Diet

I remember as a teenager, I used to love junk food. Not that I ate a lot everyday but who doesn’t love chocolates, hamburgers, fries and all the yummy things kids like to eat when they hangout with friends.

It’s hard to cut everything out, but I know in my son’s case, when he cuts out the chocolates and chips, his skin clears up dramatically.

Keep to a once a week treat and at the same time, have a look at your skin when it breaks out and think of what you ate prior. Could be that particular food was a trigger. In my daughter’s case, it was dairy products.

Exercise and Water

Teen Acne AfterEverything we eat and drink eventually goes through our blood stream.

Our liver does its best to filter out as many toxins as possible but these can and do enter our blood stream. This is one of the most important ways how to deal with acne in puberty.

The cleaner we keep our internal system, the cleaner the pores of the skin will be.

Exercise is important as it increases circulation and blood flow and then followed up with at least 2 litres of fresh water, will ensure that you are flushing away excess toxins.

It’s also important to shower daily and after sport if you have sweated excessively.

It is really important to go to sleep with clean, hydrated skin. Your skin goes to work while you sleep, repairing and regenerating new skin cells, so always clean your face of make-up, sweat and daily grime every night.

Cleansing

A common mistake people make is to over clean their acne.

Acne is not dirty skin. If you use harsh cleansers and scrubs too regularly, you will dry out your skin, which will actually make your glands produce even more oil.

Always use gentle products, and follow the directions on the packaging.

In some cases you may need to seek the help of a beautician who are very experienced in dealing with acne and in more problematic cases a dermatologist who may prescribe prescription medication.

Some have side effects, so make sure you take your parents/guardians with you.

Your daily routine could look like this

MORNING     Use a mild cleanser followed by light moisturizer containing SPF

Use a gentle exfoliating scrub 1-2 times per week

EVENING       Use a mild cleanser followed by light moisturizer or serum
